Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, says concerns that state governors could misuse proposed state police forces will be addressed through legislation as the State Police Bill progresses.
According to a Daily Post report published on Friday, July 3, 2026, Kalu acknowledged fears expressed by Nigerians over the proposal, saying, “Some people are afraid. I can see some of my Northern friends and Southern friends saying that Governors will use it against their enemies.”
He said the Senate and the executive would establish a legal framework defining the roles, powers and responsibilities of both the Federal Police Service and state police forces, with safeguards to prevent abuse and ensure accountability. Kalu noted that the bill must still pass both chambers of the National Assembly and receive presidential assent before becoming law.
The senator also said insecurity remains the biggest obstacle to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, arguing that improved security would create a better environment for the administration’s policies. He urged APC members in Abia State to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections and work toward the re-election of the president and other party candidates.
