Sowore Reacts as High Court in Abuja Sends Him to Kuje Prison for Failure to Appear in Court

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to an order by Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja remanding him in Kuje Correctional Centre over his absence from a court session in his ongoing case.

In a statement shared on his social media handle, Sowore described the charges against him as “bogus” and explained that his absence was due to consultations with his newly assembled legal team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olumide-Fusika.

According to Sowore, his lead counsel informed the court that he was unavailable because he was meeting with his lawyers to prepare his defence. However, he alleged that the judge proceeded with the remand order despite the explanation.

“Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that I be remanded in Kuje Prison for my one absence from court since the bogus case began, even though I was away consulting with my new legal team led by Olumide-Fusika, SAN,” he said.

Sowore said he remained undeterred by the decision, stating that imprisonment would not stop his activism and political struggle. He urged his supporters to remain steadfast in the pursuit of what he described as a fight against oppression, injustice, and misrule.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal High Court and prosecuting authorities had not issued an official response to his claims.
