Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede says she is stepping back from speaking publicly on national issues, citing criticism she received following her comments on governance and political corruption.
According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Jegede made the decision after facing backlash on social media over her views on the country’s challenges.
The actress had earlier criticised what she described as structural political corruption, arguing that many Nigerians bear the burden of double taxation by paying taxes while also funding essential infrastructure and services that should ordinarily be provided by government.
She also alleged that public funds meant for development are being diverted by members of the political elite, leaving citizens to shoulder the cost of basic amenities.
Her comments sparked mixed reactions online, with some social media users supporting her views while others criticised her stance.
Responding to the backlash, Jegede said the experience had discouraged her from continuing to advocate on national issues, arguing that public figures who speak out often face hostility instead of constructive engagement.
“The more I speak of the uncommon things I see happening in my country, the more people drag me. I see why people stay quiet in times of crisis. I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon, but you see Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry is the order of the day,” she said.
Jegede added that the persistent criticism directed at those who raise concerns about governance had influenced her decision to withdraw from public advocacy on national matters.
