Rahmatu Ahmed, wife of kidnapped Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) Permanent Commissioner, Barrister Ahmed Mohammed, says her family paid a ₦40 million ransom but the abductors have continued to hold her husband while demanding an additional ₦260 million.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Rahmatu said the family has exhausted its financial resources without securing Mohammed’s release after months in captivity.
According to her, the kidnappers instructed the family to convert the ransom into foreign currency before it was delivered. “They collected N40 million from us and said we should change it to dollars since December. Since that time, they are still demanding we pay another N260 million balance and we don’t know where to get that money from,” she said.
Rahmatu said the family had hoped the initial payment would secure her husband’s freedom but claimed the abductors increased their demands after receiving the money. She appealed to authorities and well-meaning Nigerians for assistance, saying the family has exhausted its resources and remains hopeful that Mohammed will return home safely.
