England head coach Thomas Tuchel has dismissed speculation over his future, insisting he has no intention of stepping down following the Three Lions’ exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the Evening Standard on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Tuchel reaffirmed his commitment to the national team after England suffered a 2-1 semi-final defeat to defending champions Argentina.
England appeared on course to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave Tuchel’s side the lead in the 55th minute. However, Argentina staged a late comeback, with Enzo Fernandez equalising before Lautaro Martinez scored the winner in stoppage time.
The defeat prompted renewed speculation about Tuchel’s future, with bookmakers reportedly installing former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the favourite to replace the German if he leaves before the end of his contract.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel said he remains focused on leading England into the next major tournament.
“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” he said.
Acknowledging the disappointment of the World Cup exit, Tuchel added:
“I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”
Despite criticism of his defensive substitutions against Argentina, the Football Association is expected to continue backing the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager.
England’s victories over Mexico in the Round of 16 and Norway in the quarter-finals, as well as the team’s overall progress to the last four, are understood to have strengthened the FA’s confidence in Tuchel.
The report also stated that Tuchel has agreed to a contract extension that would keep him in charge through the 2028 European Championship, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
Although the agreement reportedly includes performance-related clauses that could affect compensation if certain targets are not met, the FA is not expected to judge Tuchel’s tenure solely on the World Cup semi-final defeat. Instead, it is said to be assessing the team’s overall development and performances under his leadership.
England’s campaign is not yet over, with the Three Lions set to face France in the third-place play-off before preparations begin for Euro 2028. Meanwhile, speculation linking Guardiola with the England job continues, despite Tuchel’s public commitment to remain in charge.
