Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended supporters of the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket, saying they have faced criticism from people who misunderstand Nigeria’s political history.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, published on the broadcaster’s official YouTube channel on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Galadima argued that the alliance represents a legitimate political partnership rooted in Nigeria’s long tradition of cross-regional cooperation.
According to Galadima, many of the criticisms directed at supporters of the proposed ticket stem from a lack of understanding of the country’s political evolution and history.
“Those of us from this part of the country who supported the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket are being called several different names by ignorant people who have no knowledge of the history of the Nigerian state,” he said.
Galadima maintained that cooperation between political leaders from different regions has been a longstanding feature of Nigerian politics and should not attract hostility. He said supporters of the alliance should not be condemned because of their political preferences.
He also argued that previous cross-regional political alliances demonstrate the importance of national cooperation in Nigeria’s democratic development. According to him, a better understanding of the country’s political history would help reduce unnecessary divisions.
Galadima urged Nigerians to assess political alliances based on shared national interests rather than ethnicity, regional sentiments, or longstanding political differences.
He reiterated that the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso alliance should be viewed within the context of Nigeria’s political history, expressing confidence that informed public debate would promote greater understanding and national unity.
