Three Alternatives Chelsea Must Consider After Missing Out on Granit Xhaka

Chelsea are expected to explore alternative midfield targets after missing out on Granit Xhaka, with Sunderland reportedly refusing to negotiate a transfer for their captain.

According to Football London on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Chelsea’s reported £8 million bid was well below the fee Sunderland paid to sign Xhaka last year, making a deal unlikely despite reports linking the midfielder with a reunion with manager Xabi Alonso.

The Blues are now expected to prioritise an experienced midfielder capable of providing leadership, composure and Premier League experience as Alonso continues rebuilding his squad ahead of the new season.

Among the potential alternatives is Al Hilal’s Ruben Neves, whose passing range, tactical awareness, leadership and previous Premier League experience with Wolverhampton Wanderers make him a strong candidate if he returns to Europe.

Former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic, now at Manchester City, is another option. Despite recent injury setbacks, the Croatian remains valued for his press resistance, ball-carrying ability and composure in midfield.

AC Milan’s Adrien Rabiot has also been identified as a possible target, with the France international offering technical quality, physical presence and aerial ability amid uncertainty over his future in Italy.
