Niger State Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago has warned that the state government will shut down any mosque found to be delivering sermons that incite the public, as part of efforts to address insecurity.
According to a Daily Post report published on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Bago made the remarks while addressing members of the Fulani community in Minna on July 18. He urged the community to work closely with security agencies by providing useful information to help combat rising criminal activities.
The governor said the actions of armed criminals were creating negative perceptions of the Fulani community and stressed that law-abiding residents should not be associated with such acts.
Addressing the role of religious institutions, Bago warned that the government would not tolerate places of worship being used to promote messages capable of inciting violence or unrest.
“If this does not stop, the government will shut down any mosque found to be delivering sermons that incite the public,” he said.
Bago added that religious leaders, traditional institutions, residents and security agencies must work together to preserve peace and tackle insecurity across the state.
