The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is intensifying ahead of France Football’s official nominee announcement in August, with Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, and Harry Kane emerging as the leading contenders.
According to Vanguard, the award will be based on performances between August 1, 2025, and July 31, 2026, with voters considering individual quality, consistency, impact in key matches, and achievements for club and country.
Yamal strengthened his candidacy after helping Barcelona win LaLiga and playing a pivotal role in Spain’s FIFA World Cup triumph. Mbappé also enjoyed a standout campaign, finishing as the World Cup’s top scorer with 10 goals to claim the Golden Boot, while also securing the Pichichi Trophy as LaLiga’s leading scorer.
Kane completed the leading trio after scoring 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich, guiding the club to the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles.
While other players are expected to feature on the shortlist, Yamal, Mbappé, and Kane are widely regarded as the frontrunners for football’s most prestigious individual award based on their performances over the past season.
