Arsenal and Chelsea are set for another transfer battle this summer, but Chelsea appear to have moved ahead in the race to sign Atalanta defender Marco Palestra.
The 21-year-old impressed during a loan spell at Cagliari last season, emerging as one of Italy’s most promising young defenders. Both London clubs had been linked with the versatile full-back, who can also operate as a winger or midfielder.
Arsenal reportedly viewed Palestra as a potential replacement for Ben White should the England international depart the Emirates. His tactical flexibility made him an attractive option for manager Mikel Arteta.
However, Chelsea are now expected to secure the defender’s signature after reportedly agreeing a deal worth around €60 million (£52 million) with Atalanta. Reports indicate that Inter Milan had also been pursuing the player before Chelsea moved decisively to take control of negotiations.
Palestra is now expected to complete a move to Stamford Bridge in the coming days.
His ability to play multiple positions and contribute both defensively and offensively has made him one of the most sought-after young talents in Italian football. Arsenal’s hesitation to advance negotiations appears to have opened the door for Chelsea to land a player widely regarded as an ideal fit for Arteta’s system.
