Umaru Altine From Sokoto State Was the First Elected Mayor of Enugu — Senator Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has highlighted the diverse birthplaces and political contributions of several prominent Nigerians, saying they reflect a period of stronger national unity.

In a post on his verified X account, Sani noted that Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and former Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu were born in Zungeru, Niger State, while renowned author Cyprian Ekwensi was born in Minna, Niger State. He also said the late Kudirat Abiola was born in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The former Kaduna Central senator added that Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was born in Kaduna, Bola Ige grew up in Kaduna, and Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka partly grew up in Zaria, where his father served as a headmaster.

Sani further stated that Umaru Altine, who was from Sokoto State, became the first elected Mayor of Enugu, while Ike Madu, an indigene of Imo State, was elected to the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

Reflecting on those examples, Sani wrote, “Everything was going well; what must have happened to that national unity?”
