José Mourinho says his deep affection for Real Madrid was the decisive factor behind his return to the club as head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 63-year-old has been officially appointed as Real Madrid manager, returning 13 years after his first spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. Between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho led the club to a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey trophy, and a Spanish Super Cup.
His appointment comes after Real Madrid endured two consecutive seasons without a major trophy, increasing expectations for an immediate return to success both domestically and in Europe.
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Mourinho said his emotional connection to the club outweighed the challenges of the role.
“I love Real Madrid, and this is the reason why I’m coming back. I don’t deny it,” he told reporters.
The Portuguese coach will now oversee a squad undergoing transition as the club seeks to re-establish its dominance. Known for his tactical discipline and strong leadership, Mourinho faces the task of revitalising a team that has struggled for consistency in recent campaigns.
His return has generated significant excitement among supporters, many of whom hope he can replicate the success of his previous tenure. Mourinho’s managerial career includes league titles across Europe and multiple UEFA Champions League triumphs, cementing his status as one of football’s most decorated coaches.
