Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has warned that Nigeria could experience a rise in security attacks as the country approaches the next general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Ejiofor said past events indicate that insecurity often intensifies before elections. “The trend has shown right from 2014 that before elections there is an increase in attacks to create instability,” he said.
According to Ejiofor, such attacks are often intended to create instability, undermine public confidence in the government, and portray the country’s security situation in a negative light.
While discussing the recent drawdown of United States troops, he emphasized the need for sustained intelligence sharing and cooperation between Nigerian security agencies and international partners. He noted that although significant progress has been made in degrading terrorist groups, the fight against terrorism remains ongoing.
Ejiofor also echoed the Chief of Air Staff’s call for stronger coordination among military and intelligence agencies, stressing that no single institution can effectively tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. He urged authorities to remain proactive and strengthen security measures as political activities intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
