Human rights lawyer and legal scholar Chidi Odinkalu has raised concerns about governance and public accountability in Nigeria, arguing that declining ethical standards are weakening the country’s democratic institutions.
Speaking on SYMFONI’s Niger Unfiltered, Odinkalu criticised the quality of leadership in public office and questioned the integrity of some political office holders.
“A man who was convicted of stealing over ₦8 billion in 2006 is the Chief Whip in the Senate,” he said, using the claim to illustrate his argument that holders of public office should be held to high standards of integrity and accountability.
Odinkalu also criticised the National Assembly, alleging it has increasingly failed to effectively oversee the executive. He argued that several significant bills have been passed too quickly and said legislation with far-reaching consequences should undergo thorough legislative scrutiny and public consultation.
He stressed that strong, independent institutions are essential for transparency, accountability and public confidence in government, urging Nigerians to remain engaged in the democratic process and demand adherence to the rule of law.
