Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has said Chelsea’s biggest weakness last season was a lack of energy and movement in attacking areas, insisting the issue must be corrected before the new Premier League campaign.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle on July 27, 2026, the Spanish tactician made the remarks during a recent press conference, where he assessed Chelsea’s performances from the previous season.
Alonso said the club has talented attacking players but believes they did not make enough runs during crucial moments of matches.
“We need to be complete in all tactics and areas this season,” he said. “My players should understand they lacked good energy to run, especially while approaching the opponent’s 18-yard box last season. This season requires a lot of running, hard work and sacrifice, which are compulsory to win matches.”
He added that every Premier League game would be difficult if the problem remained unresolved and stressed the need to address it quickly ahead of the new season.
Alonso also said the changes would be tested in Chelsea’s opening league fixture to allow for early adjustments. The report added that some football pundits agreed with his assessment of Chelsea’s performances last season.
