The United States has launched a fresh wave of military strikes on targets in southern Iran following reports that a commercial vessel was damaged while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to reports, the U.S. said the strikes were intended to degrade Iran’s military capabilities and prevent further attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic waterway. Iranian authorities subsequently announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz “until further notice,” citing the worsening security situation.
The closure has heightened concerns over global energy supplies, as about one-fifth of the world’s oil exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts have warned that any prolonged disruption could drive up oil prices and increase global economic uncertainty.
The latest developments follow several days of military exchanges between the two countries.
