Minister of Works David Umahi has defended the Federal Government’s borrowing policy, saying the loans are being invested in major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving security, boosting economic growth and addressing hunger.
According to the report, published by the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Umahi made the remarks during the inauguration of the 122-kilometre Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road project at the Afaka Mando Arena in Kaduna State.
The minister said the government’s borrowing strategy should be assessed based on the infrastructure being delivered, arguing that improved road networks would enhance transportation, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, reduce transport costs and stimulate commercial activities.
Speaking on security, Umahi cited the ongoing reconstruction of the Abuja–Kaduna highway as an example of the impact of infrastructure development.
“Before this Abuja-Kaduna road started, there was a lot of insecurity. There were a lot of kidnappings. Today, since Mr. President started this road, no one has been kidnapped on this corridor,” he said.
According to the report, Umahi maintained that the Federal Government remains committed to delivering strategic infrastructure projects, arguing that their long-term economic and security benefits would outweigh concerns over the country’s rising debt profile.
