Chief Dan Ulasi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed that some prominent political figures from Northern Nigeria who dismissed Peter Obi’s chances before the 2023 presidential election now believe the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate could win the 2027 election.
According to the interview, Ulasi made the remarks during an appearance on Signature TV. He said the same northern leaders who had advised him in 2023 to abandon expectations of an Obi victory have since reassessed the political landscape and changed their position.
Ulasi claimed the leaders now believe Obi would win the 2027 presidential election if it is conducted, while also cautioning that he should remain vigilant.
“Top northerners who told me in 2023 that Peter Obi would not win and that I should forget it now call me and say that unless there is no election, Peter Obi will win,” Ulasi said.
He added that the leaders urged him to warn Obi to “be careful because they will try to eliminate him.”
According to the interview, Ulasi also described what he said was the political culture in parts of Northern Nigeria, arguing that influential traditional and political figures often play a significant role in shaping electoral support within their communities.
