Public affairs analyst Ben Shemang has said the legal controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s academic records was settled by the Supreme Court during the litigation that followed the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Monday, August 3, 2026, Shemang argued that continued debate over the president’s certificate controversy overlooks the fact that the country’s highest court had already considered the matter.
“Tinubu’s case had gone to the Supreme Court in 2023 election and it came back and they said, ‘no issue,’” Shemang said.
He maintained that the Supreme Court’s judgment should be regarded as final and binding, arguing that issues determined by the apex court should no longer be subject to legal dispute.
According to Shemang, continued references to the certificate controversy are driven more by political considerations than unresolved legal questions. He said the matter was addressed during the 2023 presidential election petitions, with the Supreme Court rejecting it as a basis for overturning the election outcome.
