Media personality Frank Edoho has said he was among the students who campaigned for the return of democracy during Nigeria’s military era, recalling protests against the government of former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida (IBB).
Speaking in an interview with Eden Oasis, Edoho said he and other students participated in demonstrations against the military government, claiming that their unity enabled them to raid a military base and drive an armoured tank onto their school campus.
“Before there used to be hope because the citizens had one accord. In my time in school we were doing demonstrations against the military government of IBB. We would raid a base and take an armored tank out in school, all one accord. But they were military people; now that it is not military, nobody can even speak,” he said.
Edoho argued that although Nigeria is no longer under military rule, many citizens are now reluctant to hold the government accountable. He contrasted what he described as the collective resolve of student activists during the military era with what he sees as growing public hesitation to speak out against those in power.
