Hajiya Asia El-Rufai has said she hoped her husband, Nasir El-Rufai, would retire from politics after leaving office, citing the personal toll his political career has taken on their family.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Asia El-Rufai said her husband remains committed to public service despite the challenges, describing it as a calling.
“I didn’t want my husband to be involved in politics again. It has taken its toll on us. But service for Mallam is a calling. He believes that if he can still contribute, he would do that,” she said.
She also recalled campaigning across Kaduna State in support of her husband’s political activities, saying their efforts were well documented.
Asia El-Rufai maintained that her husband’s commitment to public service has always been driven by a desire to contribute to national development. She added that he deserves a fair hearing and urged that he be treated in accordance with the law, stressing that due process and the rule of law should apply to every Nigerian regardless of political affiliation or status.
