Peter Obi has alleged that Nigeria’s political climate has become increasingly hostile to opposition figures, claiming some acquaintances now avoid greeting him in public for fear of being targeted.
Speaking during an interview on With Chude, hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Obi said he faces growing pressure because of his role as an opposition leader and expressed uncertainty about whether he would be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
“And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are fearing that if they greet me, they will become targets,” Obi said.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also claimed his vehicle was singled out for inspection at an airport while others were left untouched, which he said reinforced his belief that he was being targeted. He added that friends and supporters have advised him to avoid family and public gatherings over security concerns.
Obi’s remarks have generated debate, with supporters expressing concern and critics calling for evidence to support his allegations. At the time of the interview, the Federal Government had not publicly responded to his claims of intimidation and harassment.
