ISWAP: “When I Called My Daughter, She Cried and Said, ‘Forgive Me, Baba, They Have Abducted Us'” — Lassa

Residents of Lassa in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State remain anxious after suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants attacked Government Day Secondary School and abducted students and teachers, according to a Daily Trust report published on July 1.

The attack disrupted academic activities and prompted security forces, supported by local hunters, to launch a rescue operation. During the operation, nine students and one teacher were rescued, while one soldier and one local hunter were killed in a gun battle with the attackers.

Several students and teachers remain missing, heightening fears among their families after a follow-up rescue mission ended without additional recoveries.

Adamu Lassa, whose daughter Wamdai is the school’s head girl and among those abducted, recounted their last conversation.

“She cried and said, ‘Forgive me, Baba, they have abducted us.’ A man then collected the phone and assured me nothing would happen to them,” he said.

The incident has left the Lassa community in mourning as families await further updates on the remaining abductees.
