The God and Peoples Parliament, a Benin-based advocacy group, has called for Nigeria to adopt a regional system of government, arguing that restructuring would improve security and drive national development.
According to Punch, the group’s convener, Dr. Dele Oluwatade, made the call during a press briefing in Benin City, urging the country to replace its current federal structure with a federation of regions.
The group proposed the creation of seven regional federations, with the South-South existing as a separate region because of its unique developmental needs. It also advocated constitutional reforms to allow citizens to decide major national issues through referendums.
Oluwatade said regional governments would be better equipped to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges by adopting strategies tailored to local realities. He also called for states to have full control over their police services, arguing that decentralised policing would improve public safety and enhance law enforcement.
“Let Nigeria rise from the dust. Let each one develop his region. May God bless Nigeria, the country of great nations,” Oluwatade said.
He urged political leaders to embrace constitutional reforms that promote regional growth, accountability and self-reliance.
