“My Son, David Amadi, Has Been in Prison for 28 Years; He Was Imprisoned at 17” – Mrs. Celestina Amadi

A 75-year-old widow from Abazu Akabo in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, Mrs. Celestina Amadi, has renewed her appeal for the release of her son, David Amadi, who she says has spent 28 years on death row after being wrongly convicted of robbery.

According to Punch on Saturday, June 27, 2026, Mrs. Amadi said David was arrested in 1998 at age 17 while returning from a social event. She maintained there was no credible evidence linking him to the robbery, noting that the complainant testified the attackers wore masks and could not be identified.

“My son, David Amadi, has been in prison for 28 years. He was imprisoned when he was 17 years old, and he is now 45,” she said.

Mrs. Amadi said David and two others were sentenced to death by the High Court, with the verdict upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. She also alleged that one co-defendant was tortured into making statements implicating the others.

She appealed to the Imo State Government and relevant authorities to review the case and secure the release of the convicted men, expressing hope that her son could rebuild his life after nearly three decades in prison.
