Residents of Mpape have been left in disbelief after police allegedly rescued a 36-year-old woman who had been confined and chained inside a dark room for over a year following a bitter family disagreement linked to a business dispute.
The disturbing case, which has sparked outrage across social media and within the local community, involves a woman identified as Grace, who was allegedly discovered in a severely neglected and dehumanising condition inside her brother’s home.
According to early reports, security officers stormed a residential house in Mpape after receiving an emergency tip-off from a concerned resident who had reportedly heard unusual sounds coming from a locked room.
Officers allegedly found Grace chained at the legs, weak and unable to stand properly. She was reportedly seated on a cold floor in a dark, poorly ventilated room, surrounded by waste, indicating prolonged neglect and lack of care.
Eyewitness accounts and circulated footage from the scene painted a grim picture of the conditions she was allegedly subjected to, prompting immediate intervention by authorities. She was later rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention due to her fragile physical and psychological state.
Investigations suggest that the incident may be tied to a long-standing dispute between Grace and her brother over a joint business venture they once operated together.
Residents claim the siblings previously ran a small cement and building materials business before disagreements reportedly erupted over ownership, profits, and control of the enterprise.
Following the fallout, the brother allegedly accused Grace of unstable behaviour and claimed that she had become difficult to manage. These claims have not yet been independently verified by authorities.
The suspect, however, admitted to restraining her, insisting that she had only been confined for approximately one year and two months. He further alleged that she occasionally left the house but failed to return, which led to the decision to restrain her.
He also made additional claims regarding her personal conduct, including allegations of pregnancy, though these statements remain unconfirmed and are part of ongoing investigations.
Neighbours expressed shock that such a situation could allegedly persist unnoticed for so long. According to residents, the turning point came when a passerby reportedly heard faint noises from the locked room and alerted others.
When the door was eventually forced open, the extent of the situation reportedly left onlookers horrified, prompting immediate calls to the police.
Authorities have since launched a formal investigation to establish how long the woman had been held and whether other individuals were aware of or complicit in her confinement.
Security officials who responded to the scene described the conditions as deeply disturbing, noting that the victim appeared neglected, malnourished, and in urgent need of medical and psychological support.
A police source stated that the situation reflected a serious case of human rights violation, emphasizing that no individual should be subjected to such treatment regardless of family disputes or personal disagreements.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage online, with many calling for swift justice and accountability. Social media users expressed anger over the alleged prolonged confinement and questioned how such extreme abuse could go undetected in a residential neighborhood.
Human rights advocates have also weighed in, urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and to provide long-term protection for the victim as she recovers.
Police have confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to examine medical reports, witness statements, and the physical evidence gathered from the scene to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, Grace remains under medical care as officials assess her condition and prepare further legal steps.
The case continues to draw national attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about domestic abuse, mental health, and the need for stronger community reporting mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
