A lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Afam Ogene, has criticised what he described as the close relationship between political office holders and the judiciary, calling for clearer separation between the two arms of government.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Ogene said democratic governance works best when institutions operate strictly within their constitutional limits. He added that public confidence in the judiciary depends on its independence from political influence.
When asked about the inauguration of judges’ residences, Ogene referenced the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“On live television, we saw Minister Wike inaugurating about 10 or 11 houses for judges,” he said.
He argued that government institutions already have the administrative structures and funding needed to function independently, stressing that the judiciary must continue to protect its autonomy and credibility.
Ogene maintained that judges should remain above political controversies due to their role in interpreting laws and resolving disputes, noting that public trust in the legal system is essential for a stable democracy.
He also called for greater transparency and accountability across all branches of government, urging Nigerians to demand stronger and more credible institutions.
The lawmaker concluded that adherence to constitutional principles is necessary for long-term political stability and national development.
