Former Lagos State House of Assembly lawmaker Desmond Elliot has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the Nigerian leader is focused on building a lasting legacy rather than pursuing personal ambition.
Speaking on The Morayo Afolabi-Brown Show on June 23, 2026, Elliot said he does not believe any opposition figure has yet demonstrated the political strength required to unseat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the actor-turned-politician, Tinubu is aware that history will ultimately judge his time in office and is therefore likely to prioritise achievements that outlive his administration.
“No matter how we try to bring him down, this is a man who knows he doesn’t have more than forty years left, whether we like it or not,” Elliot said.
He argued that leaders in the later stages of their careers often become more concerned with their legacy than with accumulating power. Drawing a comparison with former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande, Elliot noted that decades after leaving office, Jakande is still remembered for his developmental projects despite serving only one term.
Elliot maintained that public recognition is earned through tangible achievements and impact on citizens’ lives. He added that public service should be measured by legacy, service, and results rather than personal enrichment.
