Two children were killed, six residents injured and three others abducted after suspected bandits attacked Rafin Ciyawa village in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying the gunmen invaded the community at night before fleeing with three residents. Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib said personnel from the Village Rescue Committee and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, supported by local hunters and vigilantes, have launched a coordinated operation to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the attackers.
A resident, Zubairu Yahaya, said the attack began at about 12:30 a.m., adding that the two children who died had been sleeping outside their Quranic teacher’s residence because of the hot weather.
“We thought the gunshots were from policemen or local vigilantes. It was only later that we realised the village was under attack by bandits,” Yahaya said.
Authorities said security operations are ongoing to restore calm and prevent further attacks in the area, while investigations into the incident continue.
