Political analyst Segun Sowunmi has predicted that the 2027 presidential election could be more competitive than many expect, arguing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may face a tougher re-election contest despite retaining significant regional support.
According to a Daily Post report published on June 25, 2026, Sowunmi said the race could ultimately narrow to a contest between President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he identified as the most likely major contenders.
Speaking on ARISE Television’s Morning Show, Sowunmi projected that Tinubu would continue to enjoy strong backing in the South-West, where he has long maintained a solid political base and party structure.
“Of course, he is going to get good numbers in the Southwest. I even suspect that the South South may even bring in more good numbers than the Southeast, the way I’m looking at things,” he said.
Sowunmi suggested that evolving political dynamics could produce stronger support for Tinubu in the South-South than in the South-East. He also projected that the president could win 22 states in the election.
While describing Tinubu as a formidable candidate with considerable electoral reach, Sowunmi argued that the outcome may depend on how effectively opposition forces consolidate their support ahead of the 2027 poll.
