Senator Ali Ndume has questioned why terrorists and bandits continue to intimidate communities in Nigeria, arguing that their advantage stems largely from access to firearms.
Speaking on the proposed state police bill in a video published by Arise News on June 24, 2026, Ndume said, “Why are the terrorists and bandits intimidating us? The only difference is they are holding an AK-47.”
The Borno South lawmaker criticized Nigeria’s current security architecture, describing the centralized federal police structure as ineffective against decentralized criminal groups. He said the system leaves many local communities vulnerable to attacks.
Ndume advocated for localized security agencies, arguing that legally armed and properly selected community members could help counter criminal elements and prevent attacks on rural settlements.
The former Senate Chief Whip also called for expanded recruitment into the security services, stating that many young Nigerians are willing to serve if given the opportunity.
He expressed optimism that decentralizing security operations could help curb insecurity but stressed that strong legal safeguards must accompany any reform to prevent abuse of power by state governors.
