Yusuf Gagdi: Governing Is Different From Campaigning Because When You Get There, You See Realities

Yusuf Gagdi has defended the administration of President Bola Tinubu against criticism over its campaign promises on security, saying the realities of governing differ from those of election campaigns.

Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Gagdi said political parties often have to adjust their plans after assuming office because of challenges that become apparent only in government.

“Every government makes promises before assuming office. Governing is different from campaigning because when you get there, you see realities that may not have been obvious before,” he said.

The lawmaker argued that Nigeria’s security challenges predate the Tinubu administration and were inherited from previous governments. While acknowledging that citizens have the right to hold leaders accountable, he urged Nigerians to consider the complexity of the country’s security situation when assessing government performance.

Gagdi added that no administration begins with a clean slate, stressing that improving security requires sustained policy reviews, collaboration among government institutions, security agencies and citizens, and continued efforts to protect lives and property.
