Former Borno State Governor and ex-Senator Ali Modu Sheriff says the presidency should remain in southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that it is not yet the North’s turn to produce the country’s next president.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Channels Television on Monday, July 6, 2026, Sheriff commented on the political realignments taking place across parties ahead of the 2027 polls and assessed the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
According to Sheriff, Atiku’s bid does not reflect the current power-sharing arrangement, noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari, who is from the North, recently completed two terms in office.
“It’s not our turn now; he (Atiku) is on his own, because it’s the turn of the South; Buhari just finished eight years,” Sheriff said.
He maintained that the South should retain the presidency in line with the principle of power rotation, as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.
