Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff says states now receive in two or three months what Borno received in federal allocations throughout his eight years in office, attributing the increase to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, July 6, 2026, Sheriff defended the administration’s policies after Peter Obi criticised Tinubu over insecurity and urged him to resign or forgo a second-term bid.
Sheriff argued that the removal of the fuel subsidy significantly increased funds distributed to states through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
“In my eight years in governance, my total allocation was about N150 billion for eight years. This is what one state now gets in two or three months,” he said, adding that some states now receive up to N55 billion monthly.
He maintained that subsidy removal prevented a deeper financial crisis and that the savings were shared with state governments rather than retained by the Federal Government.
On insecurity, Sheriff said responsibility should not rest solely with the Federal Government, stressing that governors, local governments, traditional rulers, religious leaders and citizens all have critical roles in maintaining peace and security across the country.
