In My Village, While Everyone Was Celebrating Me, a Child Pointed to His School — Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has recounted how an encounter with three schoolchildren during a visit to a rural community shaped his perspective on leadership and the need to prioritize education.

Speaking in a video shared by Advocacy for Good Governance on Monday, July 27, 2026, Obi said he was the first governor to visit the village and returned at least 10 times during his tenure.

He recalled that while community members were celebrating his visit, three schoolchildren approached him, and one highlighted the poor condition of their school.

“I was the first governor to visit his village, and I visited that village at least 10 times. While the adults and everybody were busy celebrating with me that I’m doing well for being in this village, three young kids, three small children in school, came out, and I hugged one of them,” Obi said.

According to Obi, when he asked the child if there was any problem, the pupil pointed to the school and replied, “Our school has no roof.”

Obi said the moment underscored the importance of listening directly to citizens and ensuring that critical needs, particularly in education, are addressed despite public praise.
