Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has called for improved welfare and better remuneration for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, saying enhanced support is essential to strengthening the fight against insecurity.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on June 26, 2026, Ndume said military personnel operating in conflict zones deserve better salaries, equipment and welfare packages.
“A recruit from the Depot is being paid ₦50,000 per month and you expect him to go to the desert, to Sambisa and fight and risk everything,” Ndume said, adding that the current administration has since doubled the salary of entry-level recruits to ₦100,000 per month.
While acknowledging the increase, he argued that further improvements in allowances, healthcare, accommodation, insurance and support for military families remain necessary.
Highlighting the risks faced by troops, Ndume said, “As I’m speaking to you now, a general is still missing. Brigadier General Damboa.”
He said the incident illustrates the dangers confronting personnel at all ranks and stressed that the sacrifices of the armed forces should be matched with sustained government investment in their welfare and operational capacity.
