Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has clarified comments attributed to the president regarding electricity supply and voting in future elections.
Speaking in a video published on the official YouTube channel of ARISE News on June 23, 2026, Onanuga disputed claims that President Tinubu had said Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s power challenges.
According to Onanuga, the president’s remarks were taken out of context and did not amount to a direct appeal for voters to reject him over electricity supply issues.
He revealed that he discussed the matter with Daniel Bwala and provided him with what he described as the complete version of the president’s statement.
“I gave him (Daniel Bwala) the full quote and I told him that they have just fooled you,” Onanuga said.
He added that President Tinubu had included qualifying circumstances in his remarks, explaining that if he was unable to improve power supply, Nigerians should understand the challenges involved.
The comments come amid ongoing public debate over the administration’s efforts to address Nigeria’s longstanding electricity problems and differing interpretations of the president’s statements on the issue.
