John Obi Mikel Urges Chelsea to Sign Manchester City Star

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged Chelsea F.C. to pursue a move for James Trafford, arguing that the club needs a more reliable long-term goalkeeper than Robert Sánchez.

According to the report, published by Metro on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Mikel believes Chelsea should take advantage of Trafford’s availability and consider hijacking Leeds United F.C.’s reported interest in the England goalkeeper.

“I’m looking at a goalkeeper from Manchester City: James Trafford. He’s there, he’s available. Why don’t we go and get him?” Mikel said, adding that Gianluigi Donnarumma would be expected to play if he joins Manchester City F.C..

According to the report, Chelsea have begun reshaping their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso following a disappointing campaign. Mikel argued that Sánchez has lacked the consistency needed to remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and said signing Trafford would provide a stronger foundation as Chelsea continue their rebuilding process.
