According to a report by GiveMeSport on Friday, July 31, 2026, FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players and officials following the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Argentina lost the title after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time. However, the match ended in controversy after altercations involving players and officials from both teams prompted an investigation by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
FIFA said it had received a report from its appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor and was examining allegations of unsporting behaviour during the final.
Among those under investigation are Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, who were accused of involvement in on-field altercations. Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi were also cited in the report for alleged unsporting conduct. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala is accused of striking Dani Olmo, although he said it was a push rather than a punch.
FIFA also opened proceedings against the Argentine Football Association over a political banner displayed after the semi-final against England reading, “The Falkland Islands are Argentine.” Players including Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso were seen holding the banner and could also face disciplinary action.:::
