The South African Football Association (SAFA) has failed in its attempt to overturn the three-match suspension imposed on Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
SAFA confirmed on Thursday that FIFA rejected its appeal against the sanction, which was handed to Zwane following the red card he received during South Africa’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we strongly believe that the punishment is far harsher than the offense that Themba is said to have committed,” SAFA said in a statement.
As a result, Zwane will miss South Africa’s Round of 32 clash against co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28, 2026, serving the final game of his suspension.
However, Bafana Bafana will be boosted by the return of midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who is available for selection after completing a one-match suspension.
South Africa secured a historic place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0 to finish second in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico. Hugo Broos’ side will return to their base camp in Pachuca, Mexico, before travelling to Los Angeles for the showdown with Canada.
