Reactions as Peter Obi Orders INEC to Publish Academic Certificates of Presidential Candidates

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the academic credentials submitted by all candidates seeking presidential and other elective offices.

According to Vanguard on June 30, 2026, Obi made the call in a Facebook post while reflecting on questions contained in the INEC nomination form he recently completed. He highlighted sections asking whether an aspirant had ever been declared of unsound mind or had submitted a forged certificate, arguing that public access to such records would promote transparency, accountability and confidence in the electoral process.

The former Anambra State governor also said Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic challenges require urgent government attention, citing recurring abductions of citizens, including children and security personnel, and persistent attacks on roads.

Obi maintained that leaders must prioritise the protection of lives, citizens’ welfare and national stability above political interests. His proposal has since generated mixed reactions from Nigerians, with supporters and critics expressing differing views.
