Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised the proposed establishment of state police, alleging that the initiative is being driven by political considerations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Daily Post on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Galadima made the remarks during an appearance on the ARISE Television Morning Show. He alleged that President Bola Tinubu and several state governors were backing the proposal for reasons beyond improving security, although he did not provide evidence for the claim.
Galadima argued that state-controlled police could be used for partisan purposes during elections and would not resolve Nigeria’s security challenges. Instead, he said the arrangement could complicate the country’s security architecture.
He also warned that state police could deepen ethnic and religious divisions if recruitment were dominated by particular groups, potentially affecting the rights of non-indigenes living and doing business in other states.
“The state police can be used to destroy the unity of this country… The state police for me would create more problems and divisions,” he said.
