U.S. President Donald Trump has said Iran requested talks with the United States, claiming the outreach came “through their surrogates and directly,” according to an Al Jazeera report published on July 27, 2026.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said discussions between the two countries were already underway and described them as productive.
“We’re talking with Iran right now,” Trump said. “We are having good talks.”
The president did not reveal where the meetings were taking place or identify those involved but maintained that communication channels remained open.
Trump also expressed optimism about the outcome of the negotiations, saying, “Good things can happen,” and suggesting the dialogue could help ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.
He argued that Iran’s decision to engage in talks was driven by sustained U.S. pressure.
“They would not have requested the meeting if we were doing poorly. The only reason they want to meet is because we’ve been hitting them very hard,” Trump said.
His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, with both countries maintaining diplomatic contacts despite their longstanding differences.
