Adamu Tanimu, a prominent stakeholder in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has argued that President Bola Tinubu could face a difficult path to re-election if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secures the majority of votes in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview aired on Trust TV’s official YouTube channel on Saturday, June 27, 2026, Tanimu said Atiku’s position as the major northern candidate could significantly reshape the electoral landscape.
“If Atiku, who is the single northerner on the ballot and the major candidate on the ballot from the North, can get that northern vote and take away that 60% from Tinubu, where is the vote going to come from, as Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot win the election by just the Southwest alone,” he said.
Tanimu argued that no single geopolitical zone has enough votes to determine a presidential election independently, stressing that broad national coalitions and cross-regional support are essential for victory. He added that shifting political sentiments across key states could alter previous voting patterns and warned that relying solely on traditional strongholds could prove costly in the 2027 presidential election.
